Practice Exam 1

This is the practice exam that we worked through in quiz section last Friday.  Please note that the exam on Tuesday will still happen, even though we have had a few snow days.  The exam will cover chapters 10 and 11 plus the parts of chapter 12 that will be covered in class on Monday.  Good luck!

  1. Shouldn't 3 a (ii) be 1-bromo-2-dimethylcyclopentane? If it isn't then why not?
    Thanks!

  2. Thanks for catching that mistake! The correct answer for 3 a (ii) is 1-bromo-2,3-dimethylCYCLOpentane and NOT 1-bromo-2,3-dimethylpentane. Note: the problem with the posted answer is that the "cyclo" part is missing.

Don't forget that when you're naming something with two of the same substituent (like the dimethyl part of this) you should put both numbers indicating where each substituent is attached. For example, in 1-bromo-2-dimethylcyclopentane, you are only telling us where one of the methyl groups is located (the one on carbon #2), and you did not mention where the second methyl group is attached (the one on carbon #3).
